School 2 Art Room - September
The School 2 Art Room has experienced a very busy month of September. Kindergarten through 4th Grade created their Back to School Post-it Portraits in addition to artwork produced to celebrate International Dot Day. All of these works were exhibited in time for Back to School Night on September 15th.
The 5th and 6th grades started the school year by making symbolic and colorful pinwheels as part of the Pinwheels for Peace initiative. This is the 11th consecutive year that School 2 has participated in this program in order to celebrate International Peace Day.
This June the Fort Lee School District will be presenting its bi-annual Circle the Arts Festival. All of the schools in the district will participate in this event to be held on Friday, June 2, 2017. I will be collecting student artwork throughout the year in preparation of the festival. All artwork will be returned to students by the end of the school year.
I'm looking forward to a very productive school year in the School 2 Art Room.

Welcome Back for the 2016-17 School Year
Iím excited to be welcoming your children back to School 2 for the new school year! I have done a lot of research over the summer and I have developed some new projects. As well as having some exciting artists to expose your children to.
I always like to start the new school year off by introducing new students, and reintroducing returning students, to the Art Room Code of Conduct with itís 4 simple rules:
1. Listen and follow directions.
2. Raise your hand before speaking or leaving your seat.
3. Keep hands, feet and objects to yourself.
4. Treat your teacher, classmates and materials with respect.
A situation may arise where you would like to contact me regarding something concerning your child such as: grading issues, assignments, progress or behavior. You can reach me at my personal phone extension by calling: 201-585-4630 x2637. You may have to leave a message because I try not to interrupt the class to answer the phone. I will get back to you as soon as possible. If you would prefer to reach out to me via email to initiate a conversation, you can reach me at firstname.lastname@example.org. I check my email several times a day and will get back to you by the end of the day and we can arrange for a phone conference at a mutually agreed upon time.
I will make announcements and give Art updates on my School 2 Fusion Page:
http://art.fles2.flboe.com/modules/groups/integrated_home.phtml?gid=1958850&=5a3ef79698e66acbec8c1dd7a62f5214 . This is also where you can find grading criteria, slide shows of exhibits and web links to interesting art sites.
In addition to my Fusion Page, this year Iíll be trying something new Ė I have a School 2 Twitter feed that will show samples of student work as projects are finished. You can follow me on Twitter @School2Artroom.
I look forward to having a productive and enjoyable school year with your children.
Happy New Year!!!!
Welcome to the School 2 Art Room 2016. The first part of the school year went by really quickly, culminating in the Holiday Concert and other holiday related festivities. January 2016 will be a time of finishing old projects and starting new ones.
As the weather got colder and the sunset earlier, this project by the Kindergarten classes really brightened my days. I'll share it here with you as we all wait for winter to run its course.
In early December I uploaded 2 student entries for the "Doodle for Google" contest. Please join me in wishing Anushka Grover and Ryan Wang (both from 6M) good luck as their entries journey through the selection process of this international competition.
Hoping for a continued mild winter...
Welcome Back to School 2!
Welcome back to School 2 for the 2015-2016 school year! I hope that you all had the just the right mix of fun, relaxation and learning during your summer break. I know I did.
We will continue our ďArtist of the MonthĒ program. This month's artist is Leonardo Da Vinci. I plan to alternate between contemporary artists and historically important artists each month, encouraging the appreciation of present artistís works in more diverse cultures and locations.
Just a reminder: 4th, 5th and 6th grade students are required to bring in a sketchbook for art class. The sketchbook will be used every week and will count for a substantial portion of their grade. I am requiring that sketchbooks be spiral bound. When students have used glue bound sketchbooks in the past, their class work has easily become separated from the sketchbook and lost. I ask that the sketchbooks be no larger than 12Ē x 16Ē.
5th and 6th graders will celebrate School 2ís 10th year of participation in the annual Pinwheels for Peace project and display on September 21st. This is a global initiative to celebrate International Peace Day. Information about the project can be found at: http://www.pinwheelsforpeace.com/pinwheelsforpeace/home.html
I look forward to meeting all of our new students, and welcoming back our returning students to School 2. Letís get ready to make some art!
It is Officially SPRING!
Welcome Spring! The colors, shapes and smells of the season are emerging around us as we shed winters coverings.
This will be a busy couple of months in the Fort Lee District's Art Community. The Circle of the Arts is almost upon us. Teachers, students, administrators, and Buildings & Grounds are gearing up to put on our biennial student showcase of Visual and Performing Arts. I have been collecting and compiling artwork from students since September, so mark your calendars on Friday, May 29th for the Circle of the Arts!
In the Art Room
October ended with:
Pre School working with fall leaves and pumpkins
Kindergarten is finished up their unit on lines
First Grade is finishing their cityscape drawings
Second Grade has finished their pattern pictures
Third, Fourth and Fifth Grades contributed artwork for the Halloween Dance

There were 2 field trips taken that were art related. The 3rd Grade went to the Montclair Museum to take a gallery tour and workshop in the senses in art. The 4th Grade took a trip to Lincoln Center where they attended a performance of Aida. The students are working on a graphic design unit and have designed posters for the opera.
November will be a short month with days off for Election Day, Teachers' Convention and Thanksgiving.
Our "Artist of the Month" for November is Takashi Murakami (b. 1962). Mr. Murakami is a contemporary artist based in Japan. Students from 1st to 6th Grade will spend approx 5 - 10 minutes in the beginning of each class viewing parts of a CNN interview with Mr. Murakami.
Have a wonderful month.

Welcome Back to School 2
I don't know about you, but I'm glad to be saying goodbye to March this year!
Please take a look at the slideshow that I uploaded today. It consists of 13 student designs that were entered into Google's annual Doodles 4 Google Contest. This yearly contest asks students from grade school to high school to design a logo for Google. Each year a new theme is announced. This year it was: "If I could event one thing to make the world a better place, it would be..." I received 13 wonderful entries by the deadline, which I scanned and uploaded to the Google site. On April 29th Google will announce a winner from each state in each grade. Online voting will take place after that announcement and the ultimate winners will be announced. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that Fort Lee School #2 will be represented in the Google winner's circle.
Have a great April!
We've had a very interesting winter so far this year!
Even though the snow was very disruptive at times, it was lovely to look at. We did manage to introduce 7 additional "Artists of the Week" -
Please check out my "Web Pages" toward the bottom of this page to find numerous links to these artists.
Spring is just around the corner - at least my calendar says so!
Happy Holidays to all!
The December Holiday Season is always a busy time at School 2. Students in the Art room are busy working on their assignments while helping to make the school festive with holiday decorations for the concert. The Art/Music room is also host to the Holiday Boutique for a few days in December.
I have added a new feature to my web page this month. That is the links to particular artists that we’ve studied in class so far this school year. These links can be found at the bottom of this page. Many of the sites are interactive and can be enjoyed by all students.
Lastly, I’ve included photos I took on a recent visit to the Natural History Museum in New York. Most of the pictures are from the Indigenous Peoples exhibit. I do lessons on masks with the second grade and on totems in 3rd grade. While I was there I also took photos of the museum’s amazing origami Christmas tree. These photos can be found in slideshow form through a link on the top portion of this page. Enjoy!
Looking forward to an amazing 2013 in the School 2 Art Room!
